Venice Marco Polo

easiest

Direct coach to Padova

~1h

€8 to €15

  • Coach ~55 min
  • Changing and waiting ~5 min
  • About 60 minutes in all
  1. Coach

Venice Marco Polo, arrivals, ground transport area → Padova, Piazzale Stazione (bus bays beside the railway station)

    ~55 min · €8 to €15 · FlixBus / Itabus and other coach operators

Follow signs for buses from the arrivals hall. The coach bays are outside the terminal, a short walk with luggage. Book online in advance if you can: walk-up fares are noticeably higher than advance ones, and on a full flight the cheap seats go. Coaches set down at the bus area next to Padova railway station, which is where taxis and city buses are.

Photo wanted: The signage from arrivals to the ground-transport exit, the coach bays themselves, and the set-down point at Padova station.

If you land late at night

Direct coaches thin out late at night. If you land after roughly 23:00, check the last departure before you land, and if you have missed it, the usual fallback is a taxi or transfer to Mestre and a train, which costs considerably more. Landing late with no plan is how people end up paying €90 for a taxi.

Bus to Mestre, then train

~1h 15m

€10 to €18

  • Bus ~20 min
  • Train ~25 min
  • Changing and waiting ~30 min
  • About 75 minutes in all
  1. Bus

Venice Marco Polo → Venezia Mestre railway station

    ~20 min · €3 to €10

A short shuttle run to Mestre station. Buy from the machine or desk in the terminal before boarding.

Photo wanted: The ticket machine screen and the bus stop at Mestre station.

  2. Train

    Venezia Mestre → Padova

    ~25 min · €5 to €9 · Trenitalia (regional)

Regional trains to Padova are frequent. Buy from a machine or the app, and if you hold a paper ticket, validate it before boarding. Travelling on an unvalidated paper ticket is a fine, and 'I did not know' is not accepted.

Photo wanted: The green validation machine on the platform, the object most new arrivals walk straight past.

If you land late at night

Trains between Mestre and Padova run frequently through the evening and are usually the most reliable late option, but the last services still end well before dawn.

Treviso Canova

Coach or bus via Treviso / Mestre

~2h 45m

€10 to €20

  • Coach ~40 min
  • Train ~30 min
  • Changing and waiting ~35 min
  • About 105 minutes in all
  1. Coach

Treviso Canova airport → Venezia Mestre or Treviso centre

    ~40 min · €6 to €14

Coaches meet arriving flights and run to Mestre and to Treviso. From either you continue to Padova by train.

Photo wanted: The coach stop directly outside the small terminal.

  2. Train

Venezia Mestre / Treviso → Padova

    ~30 min · €4 to €9 · Trenitalia (regional)

    Regional train onwards to Padova.

If you land late at night

Treviso is a low-cost airport with sparse late connections. A late landing here is the classic way to get stranded. Check the last onward departure against your scheduled arrival, and allow for the delay budget airlines are known for.

Bologna Guglielmo Marconi

Marconi Express, then train

~2h

€20 to €45

  • Train ~8 min
  • Train ~70 min
  • Changing and waiting ~42 min
  • About 120 minutes in all
  1. Train

    Bologna airport → Bologna Centrale

    ~8 min · €10 to €12 · Marconi Express

An automated shuttle connects the airport to the main station in a few minutes. It is the only quick way in and it is not cheap for the distance.

Photo wanted: The Marconi Express platform and ticket machine at the airport.

  2. Train

    Bologna Centrale → Padova

    ~70 min · €12 to €35 · Trenitalia / Italo

High-speed services are quick and pricey; regional services are slow and cheap. Booking a few days ahead changes the price dramatically on the fast trains.

If you land late at night

Bologna has better late-evening rail options than the Venice airports, but the fast trains to Padova are the expensive ones. Check whether a late arrival is cheaper as a night in Bologna than as a taxi.

Milan Malpensa

Malpensa Express, then train across

~4h

€35 to €80

  • Train ~50 min
  • Train ~140 min
  • Changing and waiting ~50 min
  • About 240 minutes in all
  1. Train

    Malpensa airport → Milano Centrale

    ~50 min · €13 to €16 · Malpensa Express

Direct rail link from the terminal into central Milan.

  2. Train

    Milano Centrale → Padova

    ~140 min · €20 to €60 · Trenitalia / Italo

Frequent fast trains. Book ahead. The walk-up fare on the day is several times the advance fare.

If you land late at night

This is a long crossing of northern Italy. A late Malpensa arrival usually means an overnight in Milan. Plan for that rather than discovering it.

The photo notes above are a shooting list, not a placeholder we forgot to remove. A photograph of the actual bus bay, the ticket machine screen and the green validation box is worth more to an exhausted new arrival than any paragraph we can write. If you are travelling this route, take them.
