How it goes
Authenticate your degree in the country that issued it
Italian institutions only act on foreign documents that have been authenticated where they were issued. If that country belongs to the Hague Apostille Convention and Italy has not objected to it, one apostille from its designated authority is enough. If not, the documents go through legalisation: a chain of stamps ending at the Italian embassy or consulate. Find out which applies to your country before you pay anyone, because agents routinely sell the longer route to people who only need the short one.
Choose your recognition route: Declaration of Value or CIMEA
Two documents do a similar job. The Declaration of Value is issued by the Italian consulate, is usually cheap or free, and is universally accepted, but it is tied to the consulate's timetable and to your visa process. A CIMEA statement of comparability is bought directly from CIMEA, is faster and entirely online, but costs money and is only accepted where the university says it is. Check what UNIPD asks for on your specific programme page and get that one.
Pre-enrol on Universitaly
Pre-enrolment through the Universitaly portal is what connects your university admission to your visa application. The consulate works from it. Do not treat it as optional paperwork. A visa appointment without a completed pre-enrolment goes nowhere.
Book the visa appointment early, earlier than feels reasonable
At the busiest Italian missions, appointment availability is the single biggest reason students lose an academic year. Book the moment you are eligible. If your admission is conditional, find out what the consulate will accept in the meantime rather than waiting for the unconditional letter.
What actually goes wrong
Collected from students who hit these. This section is the reason to read the page twice.
Starting authentication after the admission letter arrives
Authentication runs on your home country's office timelines and the visa runs on the consulate's. Sequenced one after the other, they do not fit inside a summer. Run them in parallel with your applications. The stamps do not expire in any way that hurts you.
Assuming CIMEA and the Declaration of Value are interchangeable
They are only interchangeable where the receiving institution says so. Buying a CIMEA statement when your programme requires a Declaration of Value means paying for a document you then cannot use. Confirm in writing with the admissions office before you pay anyone.
Name mismatches across documents
Passport, degree, transcript and admission letter must carry the same name in the same order. A middle name present on one and absent on another is a routine reason for rejection at the counter, and fixing it from Italy is far harder than fixing it at home.
